Brief History:

The mosque of Masjid al-Qismah (Jeddah) is one of the oldest mosques in Saudi Arabia. It dates back to the first century AH, when the caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab ordered for the construction of a mosque in Jeddah. The mosque has undergone several renovations but its original architecture has remained intact. It has two minarets and a square shaped prayer hall. Several Islamic architecture features such as mashrabiya and muqarnas are used in several parts of the mosque. The mosque was open to the public until the beginning of the twentieth century, and is now open for public prayer during the five daily prayers. The mosque also has two minbar (pulpit) levels, which are used by the Imam for sermons and for Friday prayers. The main facade of the building is decorated with intricate geometric designs and tilework. The main entrance of the mosque is through a large sliding gate. The walls of the mosque are clad with marble and the interior is adorned with marble and mosaics.
