Masjid Al-Hijr (Arabic: المسجد الحجر) is an ancient archeological site located at the eastern edge of the Al-Hijaz region in Saudi-Arabia. It has a long and mysterious history. According to Arab traditions, the location was believed to be where the Egyptians chased Moses to kill him when he fled from Pharaoh, however, this is not accepted by scholars of Islam. Masjid Al-Hijr, located in the north of Medina in Saudi Arabia, is one of the oldest mosques in the world. It dates back to 630 AD and is commonly believed to be the first mosque built by Prophet Muhammad and his companions after the migration from Mecca. The mosque consists of a large rectangular courtyard surrounded by two walls, with additional semi-circular walls that enclose the northern and southern sides. The enclosed area is highly decorated with a marble floor, many carvings, and colorful inscriptions. The overall size of the courtyard measures 90x36 metres with the northern wall measuring 56 metres in length and the southern wall reaching a width of 73 metres. The mosque also houses a library, a well and several monuments built in honour of significant people in Islamic history, such as the graves of the Prophet’s first two companions, Abu Bakr and Umar. The site is part of the Nabataean kingdom and consists of a large open courtyardsurrounded by over 120 tombs, mainly dating back to the Nabataean and Thamudic era between 1st century BCE - 4th century CE. Getting to Masjid Al-Hijr from Riyadh can be done by car, train, or plane. The drive from Riyadh to Al Hijr is approximately 4.5 hours. There is a railway line from Riyadh to Al-Ula, the closest railway station to Al Hijr about 2 hours away. There is also a commercial airport in Al-Ula with flights to other parts of Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. Once in Al-Hijr, it is best to hire a 4x4 vehicle or camel for getting to and from the site. There are also buses available from Al-Ula or Riyadh. Visitors to Masjid Al-Hijr should remember to dress modestly in accordance with Islamic traditions and to observe all safety regulations. The Mada'in Saleh site is closed on Fridays and open for tourists from 8am-4pm on other days.
