The Masjid al-Atiq is located in Mecca and is one of the oldest mosques in the city. The mosque has a long rectangular shape-exactly 92 meters on the north-south side and 88 meters on the east-west side. It stands next to the Kaaba, the holiest religious site of Islam, and is a prominent highlight of the Haram, the compound which houses the Kaaba. The mosque is believed to have been constructed during the era of the prophet Muhammad in the 7th century, and it is believed to be at least 1400 years old. In its original form, the mosque had 3 entrances and two mihrabs; one at the qibla wall and one in the center of each of the two long walls. Its dome was originally designed in three stories. The northern wall of the mosque has two minarets and a large arch. Above the entrance arch to Masjid al-Atiq is an inscription of the Prophet Mohammed’s prayer, inscribed in kufic script. The masjid's walls are also adorned with several Quranic inscriptions. Today, Masjid al-Atiq has been renovated and modernized multiple times, with the most significant upgrade having occurred in the mid-20th century, when it was remodeled in a modern architectural style with a new dome and four minarets.
