Brief History:

: Masjid al-Haram, also known as the Sacred Mosque or the Grand Mosque, is located in the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. It is the holiest site in Islam and is surrounded by the Kaaba, which Muslims turn towards during prayer. The Masjid al-Haram is the largest mosque in the world and can accommodate up to 2.5 million worshippers. Its grounds contain the Zamzam Well, the Kaaba, the Black Stone, Maqam Ibrahim, and many other religious artifacts. Architecture:

The architecture of Mecca's iconic Masjid al-Haram in Saudi Arabia combines elements of traditional Islamic architecture with modern architecture. The architectural style is referred to commonly as the 'Mecca style'. The grand mosque is one of the largest mosques in the world and features multiple minarets and courtyards. Surrounding the mosque itself are two courtyards and numerous domes, minarets, and arches. The large central courtyard contains the Kaaba, a rectangular building cloaked in a Quranic calligraphy. This courtyard contains a pool known as the 'Well of Zamzam', a historic well believed to have been revealed to Hagar during her travels in the desert with Isma'il. The walls of the courtyard are adorned with intricate Islamic calligraphy and motifs of floral and geometric designs. The main prayer hall of the mosque has several wide V-shaped columns and large circular domes, which have become a distinctive characteristic of the mosque's architecture. The outside of the mosque consists of four small minarets and 82 domes. The four minarets were added to the mosque in the early 2000s to accommodate for the increasing numbers of pilgrims. The mosque is also home to the world’s largest chandelier, which is 10m in diameter and hangs from the top of the largest dome. In modern times, the architecture of Masjid al-Haram has been updated to accommodate the ever-increasing number of pilgrims and to keep up with the development of the Hajj pilgrimage. New features such as larger gates, escalators, climate-controlled walkways, and even a monorail have been added. New renovations even feature a lightning-fast Wi-Fi network which allows pilgrims to immediately access the Internet while in the mosque. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
