Masjid al-Ghamama (Medina) In Saudi-Arabia: Brief History,Architecture,Visiting Hours, & Travel Information

Architecture:

The Masjid al-Ghamama in Medina (also referred to as The Prophet's Mosque) is said to be the first mosque built in Islam and is also the second holiest mosque in Islam. The mosque is built on the site where the prophet Muhammad resided from his arrival to Medina in 622 CE. The mosque has undergone several expansions and renovations during its 1,400 plus year history but the overall architecture of the mosque has retained its fundamentals. The mosque features several traditional Islamic architectural elements. These include decorative arches, domes, minarets, and the use of marble and calligraphy accents. The most prominent feature of Masjid al-Ghamama is the massive green dome and minaret at the centre of the building. This is said to have been built during the reign of the Umayyad dynasty over Medina in the 9th century and is said to mark the spot of the Prophet Muhammad’s tomb. The minaret is the tallest one in Medina and the two silver-plated doors below the dome lead to the mausoleum of the Prophet. Additional features include an expansive rectangular courtyard surrounded by arcaded porticoes, three sets of four minarets at the east, west, and south entrances of the mosque, and nine open-air courtyards. The mosque also features two porticoes (Ilwan and Sahaba) which lead into a large prayer hall with intricate domed chamber that is separated from the courtyard by a courtyard wall with nine gates. The mosque also features plenty of green spaces which are used for prayer and contemplation. The overall design of the mosque is a symbolic representation of the Islamic faith. The three minarets symbolize the three foundations of the Islamic faith: The oneness of God, the Prophethood of Muhammad, and the Divine Author of the Islamic law. The dome atop the mosque is said to represent the unity of God. The exterior design of the mosque serves to draw in devotees and set the tone of worshipping in the faith. In conclusion, Masjid al-Ghamama is a beautiful example of Islamic architecture, featuring an impressive green dome, minarets, and open-air courtyards. The architecture of the mosque serves to remind devotees of the teachings of Islam and the Prophet Muhammad, while also providing a peaceful atmosphere for reflection and prayer. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
