Brief History:
Masjid Al-Mujahid, also known as Masjid al Hazr, is a historical mosque situated in Medina, Saudi Arabia. It was built next to the famous gates of al-Anbar in 751 AD/132AH by the four pious Caliphs: Uthman ibn Affan, Ali ibn Abi Talib, Al-Mugheera ibn Abu Sufyan, and Mu'awiyah ibn Abu Sufyan. It was built to commemorate the martyrs of the Battle of al-Anbar, which occured after the companions of the prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H) had been slaughtered in the Masjid al-Haram (Sacred Mosque). The mosque consists of a courtyard, a mihrab, several marble domes, and multiple large minarets which still stand proudly today. The main significance of this mosque is the fact that it is the grave site of the aforementioned Caliphs and their companions, including Umar ibn al-Khattab and many others. The Masjid al-Mujahid, also known as the Mosque of the Medinan Mujahidin, is a mosque located in the shadow of the Prophet's Mosque (Masjid al-Nabawi) in Medina, Saudi Arabia. The Mosque of the Medinan Mujahidin was dedicated to the Prophet Muhammad's companions who fought in the battles of badr, Uhud and the rest of the campaigns in the early days of Islam. The Mosque of the Medinan Mujahidin is a large, open-air mausoleum-like structure, constructed in the typical grandiose style found in Medina. The exterior walls boast several thin columns topped with elaborate carved and molded stone crescents and stars. Above the entrance are the names of some of the Companions who fought in the battles. The interior is adorned with luxurious marble, intricate plasterwork and decorative woodwork. An immense prayer hall is flanked by rows of arches, and a terrace overlooking the city of Medina. Construction of the mosque began in 1426 and was completed in 1429. The most notable architectural feature of the mosque is its large marble minbar, which was donated by Mamluk rulers in the 15th century. It is surmounted by a magnificent mihrab and a towering blue dome. The mihrab stands out with its elaborate decoration and harmony, and is surrounded by marble-paneled walls depicting various calligraphic inscriptions honouring the Prophet and his companions. The minbar itself is an impressive six-meter structure, its base supported by four columns. The mosque's interior is fairly plain and largely consists of vast prayer halls equipped with ample seating areas. The ablution room is situated at the rear, behind the mihrab. Various benches and mats are spread out in symmetrical rows throughout for worshippers to pray in. The Mosque of the Medinan Mujahidin remains a popular destination for pilgrims and tourists alike. Visitors are welcome anytime and it can be reached by taking the bus from Medina's central bus station to Masjid al-Mujahid. It is open throughout the year and can accommodate up to 10,000 worshipers at Jummah (Friday) prayers. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
