Brief History:

: The Masjid al-Qasim in Riyadh city, the capital of Saudi Arabia, is also known as the Grand Mosque, or the King Fahd Mosque. It is one of the largest mosques in the world, with a total area of 26,500 square meters. It can accommodate up to 30,000 worshippers. The mosque was commissioned by King Fahd bin Abdulaziz in 1986 and was completed three years later. It is considered amongst the most important religious sites in the city, having been showcased to world leaders and dignitaries. The architectural design of the mosque is a combination of traditional Islamic and modern features. It has an Ottoman-style dome with two minarets, and traditional Islamic decorations including arches, vaults, Muqarnas (honeycomb ceilings), green and white marble inlaid with mother of pearl, and stone mosaics. The Masjid al-Qasim, also known as the Imam Adul-Aziz bin Muhammad Al Shebli Mosque, is located in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. This grandiose building was constructed in 1985 as part of a major city redevelopment plan to make Riyadh the cultural and spiritual centre of the Arabian Peninsula. Designed by Prince Faisal Bin Khalid Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, the Mosque is a tribute to the life of Imam Abdulkarim Al-Qasim who lived around 930-1000 AD and is believed to have studied and preached at this site. It also serves as a centre for Islamic studies. The Mosque is a contemporary interpretation of traditional Islamic architecture, imbued with regional adaptations, modern technology and ornamentation. Thirteen minarets loom over the structure, symbolizing the Unity of God. Their architectural character conveys a traditional and modern style, invented by the designer. The Mosque was constructed with white marble and features a large 140m-high central dome surrounded by four small domes. Below, there are 5 internal arcades, each filled with a series of shallow colonnades. It also includes courtyards, open spaces and a clock tower. Inside the Mosque, the floors are covered by carpets and the walls, adorned with verses from the Quran, decorated in gold and silver. The main prayer hall, which can accommodate up to 3,500 worshippers, includes a marble pulpit from which the Imam delivers the weekly sermon. The Mosque is widely known for its unique architecture and grandeur, and has become one of the major landmarks of Riyadh. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
