Founded in 1914, the museum is the oldest of its kind in the south of Russia. It is an evolution of the private museum which was arranged at the end of the 19th century by art businessmen who settled in Rostov-on-Don shortly after the town became a maritime trading port. The collection was opened to the public in 1914 and, in just four years, thanks to the generosity of the entrepreneurs, it had grown considerably and included works of the Russian Academy of Arts and the masters of the South of Russia. The collection was officially transformed into a museum in 1920 and its name has changed several times over the years.
