The Vorontsov Palace, located in St. Petersburg, is a historic palace constructed in 1749 on orders from Count Mikhail Illarionovich Vorontsov, a prominent foreign minister of Elizabeth of Russia, and designed by the Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli. Vorontsov Palace was the first Italian Baroque-style palatial residence in St. Petersburg. The palace served as a residence for the Vorontsov family until 1797 when Empress Catherine the Great ordered it turned over to the Ministry of Imperial Court. During this time, it was used for various state functions, including balls and grand events. In 1845, Grand Duke Nikolai Pavlovich took up residence in the palace, and it became a center of society in St. Petersburg. Nikolaikoi Pavlovich had the palace extensively renovated, adding a new wing and restoring its original decor.
