History:

The National Museum of Tatarstan was created in 1926 with the aim of preserving and exhibiting the historical, cultural and natural heritage of Tatarstan. The Museum was located in a small building in the center of Kazan and based on collections of ethnographic artifacts, historical costume, and ethnographic exhibits from different regions of Tatarstan and the former Soviet Union. The Museum began to systematically collect and study the cultural heritage of Tatarstan in 1932, when it became part of the All-Union Central Museum. In 1938, the museum was moved to a larger building in the Pushkin district of the city, and the staff was increased to four. At the same time the museum initiated a series of scientific expeditions, to conduct research in the field of ethnography, numismatics, archaeology, and celebration and ritual ceremonies. In the 1950s, the museum moved to a new larger building, where it has been ever since. The museum experienced a significant expansion during the 1960s as it was enriched with rare exhibits, including archaeological discoveries from Tatarstan’s Bronze Age cultures. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the museum has continued to fulfill its mission of preserving Tatarstan’s historical and cultural heritage through a number of projects aimed at reviving traditional crafts and making them available to new generations.
