History:

The Arkhangelsk Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve in Russia was established in 1970, but its history goes back much further. The museum was founded on the site of an ancient Sergiev Posad, which was a fortress and trading post. It was established by Novgorod merchants in the 12th century. The region was visited by explorer, viking, and adventurer, Vladimir the Great, and the old Russian chronicles record the area as a "chamber and halls" as early as 1256. From the late 15th century, the fortress underwent significant renovations and development, becoming a notable center of commerce and culture in the northern White Sea region of Russia. In the 18th century, the area was the site of a popular fair and served as a major trading hub between the region and Scandinavia, as well as the Russian Tsars and mercantile overseas.
