History:

The Rostov Kremlin was first erected in the 12th century by the Prince of Rostov-Suzdal. The stone walls and towers of the Fortress date to the 14th century. The city walls and moats did much to protect the Kremlin against attack by the Tatars in the 14th–16th centuries. In the 18th century, the Rostov Kremlin changed its appearance thanks to the efforts of Metropolitan Sergey. The Fortress was renovated and the Cathedral of Trinity changed its painting to one depicting the saintly life of Sergius of Radonezh. In the Soviet period of the 20th century, most of the buildings in the Kremlin Square were destroyed. However, the original walls and towers, as well as the Cathedral of the Deposition of the Robe of the Mother of God, still remain.
