History:
The monastery was founded by D. Dinis during his reign (1279-1325) and originally dedicated to Santa Maria de Braga. It was restored by King Joao III in the late 16th century and retains many of its original features. Throughout its history, Mosteiro de Bravães functioned as a place of worship and was also a centre of learning, serving as the headquarters of the Beatas heroicas, a group of female scholars who studied Classical and Biblical texts. The cloister and surrounding gardens have also been restored and are now open to the public. Mosteiro de Bravães This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Portugal.

Mosteiro de Bravães is one of the few remaining Romanesque monasteries in Portugal, with a unique architectural style that combines Gothic and Islamic elements. It has three naves, a portico, and a façade in the Manueline style. Inside, there are five chapels, including the Capilla de la Scriptura, which contains the tombs of several Portuguese kings. The monastery grounds also feature an old convent, the “Casa das Seis Virgens” or House of Six Virgins, a 16th century chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, a stone cross, a museum, and a library.
