The monastery was founded by D. Dinis during his reign (1279-1325) and originally dedicated to Santa Maria de Braga. It was restored by King Joao III in the late 16th century and retains many of its original features. Throughout its history, Mosteiro de Bravães functioned as a place of worship and was also a centre of learning, serving as the headquarters of the Beatas heroicas, a group of female scholars who studied Classical and Biblical texts. It has three naves, a portico, and a façade in the Manueline style. Inside, there are five chapels, including the Capilla de la Scriptura, which contains the tombs of several Portuguese kings.
