Construction of Igreja Matriz da Batalha began in 1388 by King John I in gratitude for the Portuguese victory in the Battle of Aljubarrota. It took nearly two centuries to complete, with construction ending in the late 15th century. The chapel features a combination of Gothic, Manueline, and Baroque architecture and is a prime example of Gothic architecture in Portugal. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Portugal.
