The original church was started around 1052 during the reign of Alfonso VI of Castile. It was built outside the city walls and was named after one of the first Portuguese princesses, Dona Ploia. In 1548, a new church was built within the walls of the city, in front of the old church, following a fire that destroyed the original building. This new construction was dedicated to Our Lady of the Populus and was built in the Manueline style, a late Gothic style named after King Manuel I of Portugal. The original church was painted in 1469 by Portuguese artist Diego Gomez and was one of the earliest representations of Portuguese art in Lisbon. The interior features several azulejos, or tiles, also painted by Gomez in the 15th century. In 1795, the façade was renovated in the neoclassical style.
