The church was built on the site of a former 12th century Romanesque church, where Saint John the Baptist, who is represented in the main facade, is believed to have been born. The exact date of the construction of Igreja de São Gião is unknown, but it is believed that it was built between 1677 and 1682. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Portugal.
