Church of the Good Shepherd (Vale d'El Rei) is a church located in the Algarve region of Portugal. It is in a village called Vale d'El Rei, which is nestled in the hinterland of the region. The church was founded in the 15th century and is a classic example of rural Portuguese architecture. It is a very charming, small country church with a colonial style bell tower and two entrances. Inside the church is a small chapel that was added in the early 19th century. It is one of the best churches in Portugal which you must visit.

History:

The exact date of the construction of the Church of the Good Shepherd is unknown. However, it is believed that it was built in the late 15th century by a Spanish sea captain as thanks for being spared from a shipwreck. Its official founder was Antonio do Moreira, who overhauled the structure in the early 19th century, adding a bell tower, chancel and sacristy. It is believed that the original structure was a Moorish fortress. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Portugal.
