Igreja e Mosteiro de São Francisco is a church and monastery located in Porto, Portugal. Construction began in 1170, following the command of Count Dom Pedro de Menezes and directed by Master Underwood. The church and monastery have gone through various renovations over the years and now feature a mix of Gothic, Baroque, and Manueline architecture styles. The facade is particularly noteworthy and is decorated with an intricately carved rose window and the figures of St. Francis and Saint Dominic to either side. Inside, the vaults are supported by a single, arcaded column.
The basilica has been a pilgrimage site since its construction and today it hosts thousands of visitors each year. The adjacent museum houses many religious artifacts and works of art related to the site. The church is also the final resting place of several notable figures, including Richard Wellesley, the first British Governor-General of India.
