History:
The Church of São Pedro is one of the oldest Catholic churches in Brazil, having been established in 1552. It was founded by Jesuit missionaries during the Portuguese colonization of the country. The original structure was destroyed in 1703 during a major earthquake, but was rebuilt in 1748, using a rococo design. The church is considered one of the finest examples of colonial-period architecture in Brazil and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1973.
