The Igreja do Carmo church dates back to 1727, when its construction was commissioned by John V, the King of Portugal. The building was designed by Dutch architect Jacob van der Schalk, who worked alongside the Brazilian architect Antônio Couto do Paco. Due to an earthquake in 1774, the church had to be partially rebuilt in the late 1700s. In the 18th century, it was common for the church to be decorated with gold and to contain multiple works of sacred art. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Portugal.
