History:
The Church of São Martinho is one of the oldest churches in Porto, believed to have been constructed in the 10th century A.D. Initially built to serve a different population than the locals, the church has always served as a gateway of sorts for those coming from afar. In the 16th century, the Jesuits even got involved and made it their official chapel. Over the years, the church has constantly been renovated and has kept its original features adorned with newer additions. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Portugal.

• The Church of São Martinho was built over 800 years ago and has a distinctive baroque architecture. • The construction of the church started around the year 1090 and was financed by King Sancho I, who was also known as “The Wise”. • It is believed that the church was built on the ruins of a temple dedicated to the Roman goddess Juno. • The church has an iconostasis, which is a screen of wooden panels engraved with 17th-century paintings.
Services:
The Church of São Martinho offers spiritual and pastoral services to the local community. The main celebration is the Mass celebrated on Sundays at 10.30am. The service is also offered every day and consists of Eucharistic adoration and ritual prayers, which includes blessing of the sick, confession, and baptism. In addition to spiritual services, the church also offers cultural and social activities. Various music concerts and other events are held throughout the year, making it a hub for the local community and a key attraction for tourists.This beautiful church in Portugal has made a lot of significance in the past.
