Church of Saint Mamede is a 16th century parish church and one of the oldest Christian buildings in Lisbon, Portugal. It was built on the ruins of an earlier temple with the financial support of Queen Leonor, and named after the 12th-century Visigothic prince and martyr Mamede. The original design of the church dates back to the Manueline period. The church was then altered to suit the tastes of the Baroque period, with the addition of a main altar, a high choir and a sacristy. The Church of Saint Mamede has been a witness to the many changes of Lisbon throughout the centuries and holds a special place in the hearts of the locals. Church of Saint Mamede History The origins of the Church of Saint Mamede can be traced back to 1521 and the reign of King Manuel I when the temple was built on the ruins of an earlier temple. According to legend, Mamede, the 12th-century Visigothic prince, had been buried in this place. The church was later remodelled and expanded in the Baroque style in 1660 on the orders of Queen Leonor. The church was then renovated in the 19th century and finally restored in the late 1990s. Additionally, the church offers baptisms and organises spiritual retreats and pilgrimages to the shrine of Saint Mamede.
