History:
The construction of Basílica da Estrela was financed by Queen Maria I of Portugal, who wanted to commemorate the birth of her son, Prince John, in 1789. Construction began in 1790 and took nine years to complete. After Marie’s death, her son, Dom João VI, ordered the construction of two larger churches and two belvederes on the hilltop surrounding the church. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Portugal.

The church is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Lisbon, and its architecture and art combine influences of both Baroque and Rococo. The floor of the basilica is laid with a mosaic of black and white stones, while its walls are decorated with golden stucco and paintings of renowned Portuguese painters. Additionally, the church houses a large rose window above the main door and a huge pipe organ with over 4,500 pipes.
