The original structure of the church is said to have been completed in 1708 and was built in the Baroque style of architecture. Igreja de São Francisco was founded by the Franciscan friars in the 1700s, who began with the construction of the great Altar of St. Francis. In 1711, the Franciscan friars decided to turn the small altar chapel into a grand public temple. The construction of the building was overseen by the Formento and Lázaro families, and the building was inaugurated and blessed on the feast day of St. Francis in 1717. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Portugal.
