History:
Igreja de São Francisco was founded by the Franciscan friars in the 1700s, who began with the construction of the great Altar of St. Francis. In 1711, the Franciscan friars decided to turn the small altar chapel into a grand public temple. The construction of the building was overseen by the Formento and Lázaro families, and the building was inaugurated and blessed on the feast day of St. Francis in 1717. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Portugal.

Igreja de São Francisco is known for its Baroque church architecture, ornate interior, and two bell towers. The design of the church is unique because it is divided into two parts; the House of the Friars, which is the section facing the plaza, and the House of the People, which is the section closest to the street. The church has three large naves and the central nave is the largest, illustrating the importance of St. Francis as the patron saint of Brazil.
