It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 and a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines in 1973. The church is dedicated to St. Thomas of Villanueva and was established in 1731. It was built on the site of an earlier church, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1787. The present building is constructed using local materials such as limestone, coral stones, and egg whites and features a distinctively Philippine style of architecture. The church is renowned for its remarkable façade, which is intricately carved and painted with elements of Philippine and Mexican baroque styles. The interior of the church is also stunning, with its fine wooden altar and altarpiece. Mass is held here every Sunday and daily services are available. The church is open to visitors.
