The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity In Palestine: History,Facts, & Services
The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity In Palestine is the oldest Christian church in the Holy Land and serves as the main seat of the Latin Patriarchate, the residence of the Latin Catholic Patriarch of Jerusalem. Built in the 4th century AD, the Cathedral has long been a place of worship to Christians living in the region. It has become a major pilgrimage destination, attracting an ever-increasing number of devout Christians every year. The Cathedral stands as a prominent reminder of the past and a symbol of faith and hope in the present.
The Cathedral was built in 336 AD, but underwent major renovations in the early nineteenth century and remains one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the region. The main entrance is located on the northern side of the building, where a long corridor then leads to an atrium with a large altar and high, vaulted ceilings. Inside, there are colorful glass windows, several chapels, and the site of the Holy Sepulcher. The main part of the Cathedral is topped by a dome, which was added in the 19th century, and is often adorned with a cross.
The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Palestine hosts several important and symbolic services throughout the year, such as the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Maundy Thursday, the midnight Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday, the celebration of Palm Sunday, the concelebrated Mass on Pentecost, the blessing of first fruits during harvest time, and many more.
