The church was founded in the late 19th century by British Anglican missionary Bishop Samuel Gobat and his wife, Mary. As such, over the years the Church has witnessed several changes in political authority. The church was damaged during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, but was later restored and reopened in 1951.
