St. James Cathedral Church in Palestine, also known as the Church of the Redeemer, is an Anglican church located in Jerusalem. It is believed to have been built in the 12th century on the site of a 5th century Byzantine basilica. It is built over what was believed to be the tomb of James the Just, brother of Jesus, and is thus an important site in Orthodox and Catholic tradition. The church is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem. It is one of the best churches in Palestine which you must visit.

History:

It is believed that the site has been a place of worship since the 4th century, and that the present structure was built by the Crusader knights during the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. The temple was dedicated in 1150. In 1633, the Syrian Orthodox Patriarch for Jerusalem was invited by the priests of St. James to hold an office there, thus laying the foundation of the Syrian Orthodox Church in Jerusalem. During the 1800s, the church suffered heavy damage but was reconstructed in 1873. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Palestine.
