Tomb of Lazarus In Palestine: History,Facts, & Services

The Tomb of Lazarus, located in the Palestinian city of Bet Lechem (Bethlehem), is believed to have been the burial place of Lazarus of Bethany, the sibling of Mary and Martha, as described in the New Testament. It is thought to be the oldest continuously-used site of Christian and pilgrim worship in the Holy Land. The present structure dates from the 12th century, but some historians believe portions of the site may be much older. Located near the Church of the Nativity, it is a popular pilgrimage site for Christians, and is visited throughout the year by tour groups. The tomb is associated with several miracles performed by Jesus as described in the New Testament, and is a source of inspiration for many Christians. Services at the site include mass, blessing ceremonies, and special religious events.
