Ethiopian Patriarchate In Palestine: History,Facts, & Services

The Ethiopian Patriarchate in Palestine is the oldest of all the African Orthodox Patriarchates in the world. It has its roots in the three pilgrimages of the African Ethiopian Saint Gebre Menfes Kidus to the Holy Land in the 4th century, which made him the first African Orthodox Christian to visit Palestine. The Ethiopian Patriarchate in Palestine was founded in the late 17th century by Ethiopian Orthodox Christians who had settled in the area. The current Patriarch is Abune Matthias I, who was elected in 2015. The Ethiopian Patriarchate was officially recognized and became a part of the Autocephalous Orthodox Churches in 1948 after the establishment of the State of Israel. Today, the Ethiopian Patriarchate in Palestine oversees 30 churches located in various parts of the Holy Land. The Ethiopian Patriarchate provides spiritual guidance, leadership, pastoral care, and social services to its congregation and to the wider Ethiopian Orthodox community in the Holy Land. Among its services, it offers baptism, marriage, and burial services, as well as Biblical studies, catechism classes, and social activities. The Patriarchate is also active in the promotion of Ethiopian culture and tradition, as well as in preserving and protecting Ethiopian Orthodox religion and heritage in the Holy Land.
