Brief History:

Masirah Mosque is a historic mosque located on the small island of Masirah off the east coast of Oman. The structure is the oldest standing mosque in Oman and was built in the 15th century by the Portuguese as a part of their occupation of the country. The mosque is a simple hall with two minarets and is constructed using coral and gypsum blocks. It houses a pulpit and a mihrab, an ornamental niche to indicate the direction of prayer towards Mecca. The walls of the mosque are decorated with floral and geometric patterns. The mosque is believed to have been built with the consent of the local population to serve as a place of worship, although initially, it was a Catholic chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Bethlehem. The local people then adopted it as their own and eventually, converted it to Islamic worship. The mosque has been officially listed as a historic monument for its well preserved architecture and its archaeological importance. This area is surrounded by a pyramidal stone wall. The interior of the mosque is adorned with numerous ornamental details, including stucco carvings, paintings, and colorful mosaics. The main prayer hall is divided into aisles, with the qibla niche set centrally in the east. The mosque includes a dedicated ablutions courtyard.
