Brief History:

Al Suwayq North Mosque is located in the Al Suwayq town in North Al Batinah, Oman. It is a large and famous mosque in the area and it was built by the local leader Muhsin bin Ali bin Sheikh in 1725. The mosque was damaged by a nearby earthquake in 1990, but the local people managed to rebuild it. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction and religious site for people of all faiths. The mosque features a large main prayer hall, with traditional decorations, a mehrab (niche) and a minbar (pulpit). In addition, there are a few smaller rooms and additional halls that are used for lectures, seminars and other functions. It is one of the most famous mosque in Oman which you must visit.

Architecture:

The Al Suwayq North Mosque is a traditional mosque in Al Suwayq, in the Sultanate of Oman. The mosque is noted for its distinctive traditional Omani architectural styling, with its main prayer hall built in the style of a traditional Omani mudhif. A mudhif is an alcove room constructed from palm branches, mud and rocks, with no beams, columns, or walls to support it. The Al Suwayq North Mosque is constructed from limestone, and is comprised of two main sections which form the facade: a portal and a prayer hall. The larger of the two, the prayer hall, is built in the style of a traditional Omani mudhif, standing at 26.7 meters in height and covering an area of 551.48 square meters. The building is decorated with ornate stuccowork, and is capped with a traditional multi-leveled wooden roof. Other traditional religious symbols are incorporated throughout the structure, including intricate geometric patterns, Arabic calligraphy, and religious motifs. The smaller of the two sections, the portal, also stands at 26.7 meters in height and covers an area of 80.3 square meters. It is adorned with intricately carved limestone, which serves to contrast the mudhif style prayer hall. A separate room on the side of the building is home to a single minaret rising from the earth to complement the facade. In total, the Al Suwayq North Mosque displays Omani architectural heritage and religious symbolism. The building is a testament to the talented Omani craftsmen of days gone by, and serves as a reminder of the importance of religion and culture among the Omani people.
