Brief History:

Al Saruj Mosque is located in Salalah, the second largest city in the Sultanate of Oman. It was built in June 2012 to commemorate 13th century, Zaydi imam, Sharif Al-Saruj, also known as Imam Salem bin Ali bin Ismail Al Saruj, whose father was an Arab from Yemen who settled in Salalah with his followers in the 1240s. Built in an area of 10,000 square meters, the mosque can accommodate up to 5,000 worshipers. The building has two minarets, the tallest reaching 68 meters, a prayer hall, a library, a conference hall, a women's section and a clock tower with a loud sounding call to prayer. The mosque was designed to reflect the local Islamic architecture, with its use of domes. The mosque also has a large dome above the main prayer hall, and four smaller domes on the corners of the building. The interior is decorated with marble floors, carpeting and chandeliers. Architecture:

The Al Saruj Mosquecomplex has a unique architecture that displays traditional Omani elements and design principles. It includes the main mosque with its iconic marble minaret, two side courtyards, two ablution spaces, a single-room prayer hall, and an adjacent cemetery. The main mosque building measures around 21 X 25 meters. It is surrounded by two side courtyards, each measuring around 6.5 X 8 meters. The mosque's main entrance is made of large wooden doors adorned with intricate mosaic tile designs. The mosque's marble minaret stands at 19 meters and is topped by a white stone onion dome. The single-room prayer hall is made of traditional local materials, such as Makka stone, marble, gypsum, and alabaster, and is designed in the traditional Omani style. The bottom section of the dome features intricate geometric designs, while the upper section features golden calligraphy with verses from the Quran. The mosque also features two ablution spaces, one for men and one for women. The cemetery adjacent to the mosque features short walls of traditional Omani brushed stone with carefully crafted brickwork tops. The tombstones are made of either Makka stone or marble and feature geometric designs, verses from the Quran, and intricate calligraphy.
