Brief History:
Al Qabil West South Central Mosque in Muscat, Oman is believed to be the nation's oldest mosque, built around the 11th century AD. It currently serves as a major religious site for Omani Muslims. The mosque includes a small mihrab, which is used to focus prayer towards the Kaaba in Mecca, as well as an attached minbar and a single minaret. The mosque has an extensive collection of Islamic manuscripts, and contains the Shrine of Sayyida Rabab, a prominent figure within the Islamic faith who is buried in the mosque. It is one of the most famous mosque in Oman which you must visit.
Architecture:
The mosque features a unique and innovative contemporary modernist Omani architectural style, utilizing traditional materials as well as modern construction methods. The mosque is built from a combination of reinforced concrete, stone, and brick, featuring an intricately detailed mashrabiyah pattern at its entrance. The main sanctuary is connected to separate wings which house a library, office and market space. Inside, the floor and walls are decorated with intricate Islamic geometric patterns. The mosque also features a Qubba, or dome, traditional to this region, which stands at the heart of the complex. There is also a larger roof space which offers views of the surrounding area. In addition, the mosque boasts a number of sustainable features, including rainwater harvesting systems and solar energy collectors. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
