The Al Mudhaireb South East Mosque is located in Sur, a city in the easternmost part of the Sultanate of Oman. It is a unique example of traditional Islamic architecture, combining elements of the Persian, Indian, Turkish and local Omani styles. Built along the coast, the mosque towers 60 meters above the ground and is one of the tallest structures in the region. The mosque is composed of two main parts – the exterior, and the interior. The exterior is made up of white and ochre coloured painted wood panels, and features an unusual curved design. It stands on a stepped uplift which gives an illusion of height and gives the structure an overall unique appearance. A triple arch flanked by two smaller arches marks the entry to the mosque. The roof is topped by an elegant central dome surrounded by four smaller domes. The interior of the mosque has a large main prayer area, surrounded by several smaller spaces used for additional prayers. The interior is decorated with ornately patterned white wood panels that define the various spaces. The ceiling and walls are covered with intricately painted patterns, depicting various Islamic motifs such as stars, crescents, and traditional floral designs. Above the main prayer space is a spectacular chandelier made from beaten brass, crystals, and coloured glass.
