The Al Mawaleh West Mosque in Muscat, Oman was designed in the traditional Islamic architectural style. The overall structure of the mosque is made up of a long central hall, flanked by two smaller side prayer rooms for the ladies and the imam. The façade of the building is ornately adorned with detailed geometric designs, including both Islamic geometrics and floral arabesque motifs carved in limestone. This decorative design also extends to the main entrance door, as well as the many windows throughout the structure. The roof is flat, with each of the four sides of the structure held up by crenellated arches. The interior of the building is dramatically lit by towering minarets that soar high above the roof. Finally, the mosque is completed by two slender minarets that flank the entrance and provide an iconic presence to the building. Constructed from black and white limestone, the minarets are further adorned with geometric and floral motifs, as well as Quranic inscriptions in Arabic calligraphy.
