Al Mazunah East Mosque, also known as Masjid Al Mazunah East in Oman is an ancient mosque located east of the Ibra city. It is the oldest mosque in the country and dates back to 10th century CE. The mosque was built during the era of the Umayyad caliphate in the 9th century to serve the Persian settlers in Oman. The mosque used to accommodate up to 600 worshippers, but now, due to increased population, it can only accommodate about 20 people each time. The mosque has two towering minarets, a barrel-vaulted ceiling and a beautifully decorated mihrab. The walls are covered with inscriptions in kufic script. It is also believed to be the place where the prophet Muhammad performed his first Friday prayers in Oman. The mosque is now a UNESCO world heritage site.
