Al Liwa Mosque is located in the old quarter of Muscat, the capital city of Oman. It is one of the oldest mosques in the city, dating back to the days of the Imamate of Oman before its fall in 1954. The mosque is said to have been built by Sultan bin Seif in 1747. The two-storey building is constructed in typical Omani style with a small internal courtyard. The main prayer hall is decorated with fine Islamic verses painted in gold, and is mainly used for Friday congregational prayers. The main gate of the mosque has an engraving of the Muslim's declaration of faith, or "shahada" written in Kufic script. The Al Liwa Mosque in Oman is a large, white-walled structure featuring a multi-domed structure. The mosque's main prayer hall is flanked by two symmetrical long wings, and two minarets with balconies stand guard over the entrance. Inside the prayer hall, a large open area is filled with marble and decorated in bright hues of pink and blue. The mosque also features a spacious courtyard surrounded by arched colonnades. The walls of the mosque are filled with intricate calligraphy and are decorated with ornamental arches, while a shimmering golden dome stands atop the roof.
