The parish was established in 1851 by Reverend John McElroy, who recruited Irish immigrants to the parish and encouraged them to contribute to the building of a larger church. Construction of the current church building commenced in 1861 and was completed in 1864. The architect was Robert Cary Long, Jr., and it was the first building of its kind in Baltimore.
