Brief History:
Al Khonji Mosque is a historic mosque located in the seaside town of Duqm in the South Al Sharqiyah Governorate of Oman. It dates back to the late 18th century and is considered one of the oldest mosques in Oman. The mosque is named after the family of the eponymous Governor of the town, Muhammad bin Ali Al Khonji. The mosque has a square plan and was constructed in the architectural style that was commonplace in the region at the time, with a prayer hall and four minarets. The mosque has numerous decorative features, including carved stonework and intricate stained-glass windows in the prayer hall. Historically, Al Khonji Mosque served as a focal point for religious and social gatherings in the town, and is still in use to this day. It is one of the most famous mosque in Oman which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Al Khonji Mosque, located in the Muscat Governorate of Oman, is an architecturally unique example of a traditional mosque in the region. Built in the late 19th century, the mosque follows classic Islamic architecture with its tall, simple, single-story design with an inner courtyard flanked by two rows of four columns that support the central prayer hall. The prayer hall features an intricately carved ribbed wooden ceiling, a central slim minaret, and two domed recesses for ablution fonts. The main prayer hall is further adorned by four pillars decorated with intricately-carved floral and geometric patterns. At the entrance of the mosque lies an ornamental porch protected from the sun. The mosque is surrounded by a small garden with palm trees, lemon trees, and olive trees. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
Visiting Hours:
The Al Khonji Mosque in Oman typically has visiting hours of 8am - 12pm and 4pm - 8pm every day of the week. It is recommended to visit the mosque during these hours to ensure that visitors are able to experience the beauty of the mosque and those inside to pray aren’t disturbed.
