In 1681, it was the place where Imam Sultan bin Saif Al Ya’ruba, the founder of the Ya’rubi Dynasty, declared Sultanate after overthrowing the then-ruling Nabhani Dynasty. In 1763, Al Jifnain Mosque was the site of a great battle when the Ya’rubi Dynasty was overthrown by Sheikh Ahmad bin Said. It was also used by many political figures to launch religious and political reforms throughout the centuries. Today, the mosque is a popular destination for pilgrims, who come to view its colorful frescoes, old prayer carpets, and ancient artifacts. Architecture:

The Al Jifnain West Mosque is located in the port city of Muscat, the capital of Oman. Built in 1992, the structure is composed of large domed ceiling with qibla wall (the wall which orients the worshippers towards Mecca). The mosque is lavishly decorated with a mixture of classic Arabic elements such as arches and motifs, and traditional Omani elements of sail-like finials and round protrusions. Its walls are decorated with blue and white tiles and intricate geometric patterns. The exterior of the mosque is surrounded by a white marble patio and four four-storied minarets. These minarets have conical roof and center domed finials. The entrance to the mosque leads to a grand courtyard with gardens, fountains and benches, creating a calming atmosphere in which to worship. The interior of the mosque is adorned with a marble fountain and a carpeted main prayer hall. Other features of the mosque include a library and a large open area for prayers and socializing.
