Architecture:
The Al Aqur East South Central Mosque (ESCM) in Oman is an imposing structure that stands out amidst the surrounding desert landscape. It is the largest mosque in Oman and is an important symbol for Muslims living in the country, as it is the main mosque for performing the daily five prayers. The overall design of the mosque is inspired by Islamic and regional architectural traditions and includes a rectangular plan with a large rectangular courtyard. The prayer hall is the main part of the mosque and is made up of four corner nests of four domes that feature different colours and motifs. This represents the four principles of Islam. The entrance of the mosque is located on the east side and is framed by another four minarets of the same height and size as the domes, with a central cupola above. The material used to construct the building is mostly quarried stone combined with mud plaster. Furthermore, the interior of the mosque is adorned by intricate Islamic and regional decorations. The walls, the dome and columns of the mosque are decorated with different Islamic motifs in a range of colour combinations. This impressive mosque is also home to several tombs, including the tomb of the founder of the Al Aqur dynasty and also several shrines commonly visited by Muslims of the city.
