The Swatar Parish Church was first documented in records in 1687. The church was largely restored by Grand Master Emanuel Pinto de Fonseca in the mid-18th century. Various religious figures had a hand in beautifying and decorating the church. In 1773, the altar dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows was brought over from Rome by Father Bartolomeo Magro.
