The Cathedral of the Assumption was first established in 1821, when Father Stephen T. Badin, the first Catholic priest ordained in the United States, visited Louisville. The cornerstone for the first cathedral was laid in 1823, and the structure was completed by 1834. The original cathedral was destroyed by a fire in 1865 and was replaced the following year with the current structure. The structure was designed by the renowned architect Henry Edward Kampman and paid for with donations from the local Catholic community. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Malta.
