Basilica of the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta' Pinu In Malta: History,Facts, & Services
The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta' Pinu is a Roman Catholic basilica located on the picturesque island of Gozo in the Mediterranean Sea. Located on the outskirts of the city of Ghajnsielem, the basilica is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and its origins can be traced back to the 16th century. In 1921, the Bishop of Gozo, Monsignor Petru Gonzi, translated a painting of the Virgin Mary from the parish church to a simple chapel near the Zebbug parish. Reported apparitions of the Virgin occurred in the early 1920s, and the area soon gained a reputation as a pilgrimage site. In 1932, a larger temple was built to accommodate greater numbers of pilgrims. In 1941, this temple was designated as a basilica by Pope Pius XII and in 2001, the Pope John Paul II designated it a national shrine. The site is known for its many offerings, including the celebration of daily masses, a museum, and a grotto dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
