The Vilnius Evangelical Reformed Church was founded in 1582 by Jonas Bretkūnas, an ardent Protestant reformer who had been influenced by the teachings of John Calvin and had escaped persecution in Protestant countries to preach freely in Lithuania. Bretkūnas played an important role in the dissemination of Protestant truths in last Lithuanian Grand Duchy and had a significant impact on the Reformed movement in Lithuania. In the 1630s, the Vilnius Reformed Congregation experienced a period of religious freedom that was ended in 1641 by the Catholic Church's Counter-Reformation. By the mid-18th century, the church was in decline and faced persecution and restrictions on its activities by both the Russian and Prussian Empires. The Vilnius Reformed congregation gained religious autonomy in the early 20th century and by the 1930s had established itself as a vibrant and influential church in the local community. In 1941, the Nazis occupied Lithuania and the congregation was forced into hiding. During, as well as after World War II, the Vilnius Reformed Church was subjected to political and ideological persecution and most of its property was destroyed or confiscated. The church experienced a resurgence in the late 20th century, when it regained its autonomy and experienced a revival. Today, the Vilnius Reformed Church stands as a symbol of the resilience of its congregants and their steadfast commitment to the Protestant faith. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Lithuania.
