Evangelical Lutheran Church In Lithuania (ELCL) is a Protestant denomination in Lithuania. It was established in 2007 after almost 80 years of Estonia and Lithuania being separate countries and the other churches separated because of power struggles within them. The ELCL mainly operates in the cities of Vilnius, Kaunas, and Mažeikiai and is the national Lutheran Church in the country. It is one of the best churches in Lithuania which you must visit.

History:

The ELCL traces its roots to the former Prussian rule over the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 16th century. This rule brought Lutheranism to the country and the country became a part of the “Lutheran Commonwealth” in 1569. During this period, the Lithuanian population was heavily influenced by Calvinism and the Evangelical Reformed Church of Lithuania was established in 1592. After World War II, the church faced major difficulties in winning recognition from the Soviet government. Eventually, in 2007, the ELCL was re-established as the national and state church of Lithuania. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Lithuania.

The ELCL has more than 13,000 members and approximately 35 congregations throughout the country. The church is a member of the Lutheran World Federation, the Conference of European Churches and the World Council of Churches and has a strong relationship with the Church of Sweden. It believes in the Triune God and in the Bible as the main source of revelation. The church follows the Augsburg Confession, the Second Helvetic Confession and the Small Catechism of Dr. Martin Luther.

Services offered by the ELCL include baptism, ordination rites, confirmation, Holy Communion, funerals, weddings, memorial services, and outreach programs. Worship services are held weekly and are livestreamed.
