Urbanedge Lesotho is an NGO based in Lesotho that works to improve the quality of life of urban dwellers living in extreme poverty. The organization works in partnership with communities and other stakeholders to protect and secure urban land rights, access to quality housing, basic services, education, healthcare, employment, and access to energy and water. In terms of the organization’s history, Urbanedge Lesotho was founded in 1996 in the wake of the political upheaval that erupted in Lesotho in the late 1970s. During the unrest, many of Lesotho’s urban residents were affected by displacement and reduced access to land. An agreement was signed between the UN and Lesotho’s government, which outlined Urbanedge Lesotho’s role in developing housing in the country. Urbanedge Lesotho has since been working with other local and international organizations to deliver a range of services, including the provision of basic services, training and capacity building, and the promotion of participatory consultation to improve community-level service delivery. Urbanedge Lesotho has also partnered with the Lesotho government to help create affordable housing and water and sanitation solutions and to strengthen the capacity of civil society stakeholders, intellectuals, and researchers. The organization also works with other NGOs, churches, and the private sector to promote sustainable economic development in Lesotho.
