The Evangelical Church in Lesotho was founded in 1933 as a mission arm of the Free Church of Scotland. The first missionary, the Rev. Minnie Parker, arrived in the area in April of 1933. Within six months she had established the first church in the area. As the church grew, more missionaries were sent out and more churches and village centers were founded. By 1937, the church had grown to include dozens of churches, thousands of members, a Bible School, and a Women's Auxiliary. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Lesotho.

As of 2020, the ECG has more than 10,000 members spread across over 100 churches and 500 village centers. The ECG is part of a larger global body of churches, the World Communion of Reformed Churches, which includes 80 million members worldwide.
