History:
The Royal Automobile Museum (Arabic: المتحف الملكي للسيارات) in Amman, Jordan was established by the late King Hussein bin Talal in 1985 as a memorial to his fondness for cars. The museum is the only institution of its kind in the Middle East. The museum’s collection of over 120 vintage automobiles, organized chronologically, represent the development of the automobile in the 20th century Middle East. Cars from before and after Jordanian independence, cars from Jordanian motoring clubs, and cars of those special to the late King Hussein are displayed at the Royal Automobile Museum. Visitors to the museum can see a variety of vintage cars including American, British, German and French models, the oldest of which dates back to 1922. The collection features a lavish array of luxury cars, including a 1932 Chrysler Imperial, a Rolls Royce Phantom II, a 1927 Bentley limousine and a 1934 Hispano Suiza cabriolet. The oldest car in the collection is a 1922 Dodge Tourer, while the rarest is a 1970 Citroën DS coupé. Cars from 4x4 specialist Jeep and Mercedes-Benz are also featured at the museum, along with vintage taxicabs, motorcycles, scooters and other motorized vehicles. In addition, the Royal Automobile Museum houses a small shop selling car memorabilia and vintage cars and auto parts.
